Sometimes, just knowing what to do when an accident occurs can help you to remain calm. Our teams may be able to help you over the phone, supporting you right from the start, and will advise you what to do before you arrive at one of our practices for your emergency dental appointment.
How the early stages are handled can often be the difference between saving or losing a tooth. Some of the information below may assist you is addressing your dental emergency in the most appropriate way.
What to do if your tooth is knocked out
- * Hold the tooth by the crown and rinse off the root of the tooth in water if it’s dirty. Do not scrub it or remove any attached tissue fragments.
- * If possible, gently insert and hold the tooth in its socket, make sure the tooth is the right way around.
- * If that isn’t possible, put the tooth in a cup of milk or wrap the teeth in cling film (Glad Wrap) as it is, or hold it gently in your mouth, tucked inside the cheek and contact our centre as soon as possible.
- * Take care not to swallow the tooth!
- * If your child’s baby, or first tooth is knocked out, we probably won’t try to save it, but would carefully examine the site of the injury and the other teeth to make sure there is no other damage.
What to do if your tooth is broken
- * Rinse your mouth with warm water to clean the area.
- * Place a cold compress on the area to keep any swelling down.
- * Call our centre immediately to make an emergency dentist appointment.
What to do if you have toothache:
Toothache can be debilitating for sufferers. It can strike without warning, and can leave the sufferer unable to function, unable to sleep and unable to eat properly. Toothache at all stages should be addressed as soon as possible, as there is clearly a dental issue that is causing the pain – let us find out what it is and help you find relief.
We have a few tips for you to try if you have toothache, while you wait for your appointment:
- * Contact our centre straight away. Explain that you are suffering from toothache and we will offer you our first available emergency appointment.
- * Ensure that you keep this area clean by rinsing and flossing gently around the area.
- * Never put aspirin or any other painkiller against the gums or the aching tooth.
- * You can take what you would normally take for a headache to alleviate the pain until your appointment.
- * If at any stage you feel ill, suffer from swelling or a temperature you should immediately attend our practice or your closest emergency room.
What to do if something is caught in the teeth
If you have an object caught between the teeth, this can lead to pain, and can also cause damage to the teeth and gingival tissues if not dealt with quickly.
Dental Excel emergency dentists can help if you cannot remove the object yourself, but if you want to try, follow these tips:
- * Try to gently remove the object with dental floss only, using slow, deliberate movements backwards and forwards to try to wriggle it out.
- * Never use a sharp instrument to remove any object that is stuck between your teeth.
- * If you can’t dislodge the object using dental floss, contact our centre for a dentist appointment or further instruction.
There are numerous reasons why you may need an emergency dentist. Never be afraid to contact us to tell us what has happened – no accident with your teeth is too small, and we will advise you what to do next.
